Arthurs Photography Goes Carbon Negative

If you’ve been following my photoblog for the past year, you might have noticed that I have a deep connection to the natural environment. My idea of fun is to go interior camping for a week in early May or go for a walk with my wife on the local trails with camera and dogs in tow.

When I first started this blog, I was happy to find a domain registrar and hosting platform that is “300% green”. GreenGeeks WebHosting calculates their annual carbon footprint and then buys 3x that amount in renewable energy.

I attended a conference last year and one session was about calculating your personal carbon footprint. They used an online calculator that not only looks at your annual energy, flights, and driving, but also the daily things, like food, clothing , and electronics. You can find that calculator here.

Last week, I calculated the carbon footprint for me and my wife for the last 12 months. This included the embedded carbon of buying a new car and all the Christmas shopping that we did. This also includes the driving that I did when going out with the camera, printing cost of products, and energy use for photo editing and website development. After all that, I found we produced about 18.115 tonnes of carbon. A third of that was the new car.

So, in order to go carbon negative, we purchased 20 tonnes of carbon credits from CarbonZero. This way we can support companies that are working towards a cleaner and more sustainable planet.

My most important resolution for 2021 will be to reduce my carbon footprint. Either way, I intend to purchase carbon credits at the end of the year, to make sure I’m doing what I can to remain carbon negative.
